Course Overview

“With Good Reason: An Introduction to Critical Thinking” is an interactive course that helps participants move beyond assumptions and knee-jerk reactions, guiding them toward thoughtful, well-supported conclusions and decisions.

The first segment establishes a foundation for critical thinking, focusing on the distinction between critical and creative thinking and outlining the stages of the critical thinking process. Participants will learn to identify underlying issues and decisions that demand attention and practice techniques like Socratic questioning and the DOUBT method to dissect and refine arguments. Analytical tools such as fishbone diagrams, SWOT analysis, fault tree analysis, and value stream mapping will be introduced, giving participants practical ways to explore complex issues.

The second segment turns attention to information assessment and structured argumentation. Participants will explore techniques for evaluating the credibility of sources, recognizing common logic fallacies, and synthesizing information effectively. They’ll also learn to present information persuasively using argument models like Toulmin’s Model, Aristotle’s Rhetorical Triangle, Rogerian Argument, and Monroe’s Motivated Sequence. The session culminates in applying all learned techniques to address a realistic workplace issue, helping participants embed critical thinking into their day-to-day decision-making.
