Total Team-Building Workshop

Tactics for Working Better Together

Business Team-Building Course

Course Highlights

This business team-building workshop will:

  • Introduce the Purpose Triangle as a practical framework for defining what a team exists to do and using that clarity to guide decisions about work product, processes, and people interactions.
  • Run participants through four connected rounds built around a single scenario that escalates in complexity and stakes across the day.
  • Challenge teams to sort competing priorities under pressure and evaluate their decisions against a stated purpose rather than instinct or habit.
  • Name the eleven behaviors that undermine team performance through the DYSFUNCTION framework and connect them directly to what the group observes in the scenario and recognizes in their own team.
  • Close with a team agreement built from what the rounds revealed and grounded in the team’s actual situation.

Course Overview

This course runs in rounds. The scenario begins at the start of the day and escalates through each one. Nothing is isolated. Every exercise connects to the same center.

“Total Team-Building: Tactics for Working Better Together” is a one-day onsite workshop built around the Purpose Triangle, a framework that places a team’s core purpose at the center of decisions about work product, processes, and people interactions. The day opens by teaching the triangle through a brief, familiar example. It then moves into a detailed scenario that the full group works through across four rounds, each one raising the stakes and revealing something new about how the team thinks, decides, and behaves when things get complicated.

The scenario setting shifts based on the client. Banking teams, healthcare teams, and operations teams have all worked through versions of this course. The scenario is not always an exact match for the client’s industry, and that is intentional. Some distance from the familiar is part of what makes the learning transfer. Every round connects back to the team in the room, and the day closes with an agreement built from what participants recognized in themselves, not from what they observed in a fictional setting.

The following outline highlights some of the workshop’s learning points. As part of your training program, we will modify content as needed to meet your business objectives. Upon request, we will provide you with a copy of the participant materials prior to the session(s).

Program Objectives

At this program’s conclusion, participants should be able to:

  • Apply the Purpose Triangle to define what their team exists to do and describe what that purpose requires of their work product, their processes, and their people interactions.
  • Evaluate a decision or course of action against a stated purpose and explain why it supports or undermines it.
  • Sort competing priorities under pressure and connect their reasoning back to purpose rather than urgency or habit.
  • Name the eleven behaviors in the DYSFUNCTION framework, identify where they appeared in the scenario, and assess which ones are present in their own team.
  • Draft a team agreement specific enough to guide real behavior and hold up over time.

Workshop Modules

The Triangle: What This Team Is For

The workshop opens with the Purpose Triangle, a framework that becomes the decision-making lens for everything that follows. Participants will work through a brief example that makes the framework immediately intuitive, then apply it to the day’s scenario setting before turning it toward their own team. The purpose statement the group produces in this module anchors every round that follows.

Round One: Defining the Purpose

Teams work through the Purpose Triangle for the scenario setting and then apply the same framework to their own team. Participants will define purpose, describe what good looks like across all three sides of the triangle, and identify the behaviors that support it and the ones that undermine it. The round closes with each team producing a purpose statement for their own group, specific enough to guide a real decision. Teams present and evaluate each other’s thinking.

Round Two: The Shift

The scenario is now live. Multiple things are going wrong at once. Teams will sort a set of competing decisions and defend their reasoning in front of the group. The debrief asks not just what teams decided but whether their reasoning stayed anchored in purpose or drifted toward something else — and where the same drift happens in their own work.

Round Three: What the Shift Revealed

The immediate situation has passed. What surfaces in the debrief is something the team has been living with longer than one shift. Participants will work with the DYSFUNCTION framework to name what they observed in the scenario and assess honestly which of those behaviors are present in their own team. Teams present and evaluate each other’s assessments. The conversation that follows tends to be the most candid of the day.

Round Four: Our Agreement

The workshop closes with what the team builds. Using everything the rounds surfaced, each team drafts an agreement specific enough to guide real behavior and hold up over time. The agreement is modeled on what the scenario revealed but written entirely in the team’s own language and grounded in their own situation. The full group votes on which agreement they would actually want to work under.

Target Audience

This workshop is designed for groups that want to:

  • Build a shared understanding of what the team exists to do and use that clarity as a real decision-making tool.
  • Practice making purpose-driven decisions inside a scenario that feels genuine rather than artificially simple.
  • Name and address the dysfunctional behaviors that are getting in the way of better performance.
  • Leave with a team agreement that reflects what the group actually worked through rather than what sounded good in the moment.

Frequently Asked Questions About This Team-Building Workshop

Does the scenario change based on our industry?

Yes. The workshop has been delivered in banking, healthcare, and plant wholesale settings, among others. We select the scenario in advance based on what fits the client. One thing worth knowing: we do not always match the scenario exactly to the client’s industry. Some distance from familiar territory is part of what makes the learning transfer. What always comes back to the team’s own situation is the Purpose Triangle and the agreement they build from it.

What is the Purpose Triangle?

The Purpose Triangle is a Business Training Works framework that places a team’s core purpose at the center of decisions about work product, processes, and people interactions. The facilitator introduces and teaches it at the start of the day. No advance preparation is required.

What is the DYSFUNCTION framework?

DYSFUNCTION is a Business Training Works tool that names eleven specific behaviors that undermine team performance. It is not a personality assessment. It is a framework for naming what the team has probably already observed but may not have had shared language to address. The behaviors surface in the scenario first, which makes the conversation about the team’s own dynamics easier to have.

How does the team agreement work?

The agreement comes directly from what the scenario and the rounds surfaced, not from a template. It is written in the team’s own language and grounded in their own situation. Teams see how the scenario characters handled their situation and then build something real from that example — something specific enough to hold up when the pressure is back on Monday morning.

Is this workshop appropriate for teams that are already functioning well?

Yes. High-functioning teams often get the most out of this workshop because they have the safety to engage honestly with the DYSFUNCTION framework and the Purpose Triangle. Teams that are performing well frequently discover one or two places where purpose has drifted or dysfunction has been normalized. Having language to address those gaps before they grow is genuinely useful.

How long is this program?

The standard format is a full-day onsite session. We can adjust the duration and emphasis based on your schedule and priorities.

Can this workshop be customized for our team?

Yes. As with all Business Training Works programs, we can modify content as needed to meet your group’s specific goals and objectives.
