Designing Data-Driven Stories

Course Highlights

This data storytelling workshop will:

  • Show participants how to craft engaging narratives that make data meaningful.
  • Offer frameworks for identifying and isolating key messages within data sets.
  • Introduce techniques for using analogies and storytelling structures to present complex information simply.
  • Provide strategies for designing effective charts, selecting the right visuals, and avoiding common data visualization pitfalls.
  • Emphasize the importance of audience-centered presentation design to ensure clarity and impact.

Course Overview

“Narrative Numbers: Designing Data-Driven Stories” combines the art of storytelling with the science of data visualization to help teams turn complex data into compelling stories. In this full-day workshop, participants will learn to identify key messages, choose effective charts, and design data presentations that keep the audience engaged and informed.

We’ll start with an exploration of what makes a data-driven story compelling, discussing three classic plot types: heroic, tragic, and bittersweet. Participants will learn to structure their data narrative with essential parts—setting, conflict, and resolution—and apply the Description, Prediction, and Prescription model to connect data insights with actionable recommendations.

The course also covers practical data visualization techniques. Participants will learn to choose the right charts for different data types, use labels and summaries to enhance understanding, and avoid common mistakes like misleading axes or cluttered visuals. Throughout the day, participants will practice turning data into stories that resonate with their audience, using tools like allegories, analogies, and examples to make complex concepts accessible.

By the end of the session, participants will feel equipped to craft data presentations that not only inform but also inspire action.

The following outline highlights the course’s key learning points. As part of your training, we’ll adjust content to meet specific goals. Upon request, we’ll provide participant materials before the session(s).
