Efficiency and Organizational Skills Training

A Clean Desk Is Possible: Organizing for the Overwhelmed

Course Outcomes

This organizational skills workshop will:

  • Provide a process for quickly handling mail (paper and electronic) as it arrives at home or the office.
  • Help participants determine what to keep and what to toss.
  • Explain a simple and functional filing system anyone can use.
  • Provide guidance for sifting through years of clutter.
  • Suggest tactics for conquering Outlook once and for all.

Course Overview

Does your desk look as if it has been through a natural disaster?  Do you routinely have a hard time putting your finger on “that document?”  If being better organized would improve your ability to get your work done, this session is for you.  During this workshop, participants will identify their organizational challenges and develop solutions for addressing them.  Once back on the job, they will have an arsenal of tools to streamline their work.

Program Objectives

At this program’s conclusion, participants should be able to:

  • Determine what they should keep and why.
  • Understand that objects are just that.
  • Quickly sort through mail and other paperwork.
  • Implement and stick to a filing system.
  • Get control of clutter.
  • Manage email and get the most out of Outlook.

The following outline highlights some of the course’s key learning points. As part of your training program, we will modify content as needed to meet your business objectives. Upon request, we will provide you with a copy of the participant materials prior to the session(s).

Workshop Outline

Should It Stay, or Should It Go?: Evaluating What You’ve Got

This opening segment examines stuff and its role in our lives. By the end of this discussion, participants should have a thorough understanding of why they accumulate what they do and how they will benefit from making hard choices about what to keep.

I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For: Sorting Mail and Other Documents

Most of us could get control if we could stop the flood of new papers from showing up. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely this will happen. This portion of the program covers tactics for quickly sorting through mail and paperwork. It also addresses strategies for reducing the number of unnecessary documents that come through the door.

Go Back Jack, and Do It Again: Establishing a File System You’ll Use

Setting up a system for filing is rarely the step people struggle with in their attempts to stay organized. Rather, the challenge most of us run up against is following the systems we’ve put in place! This course segment introduces a filing system that’s easy to understand and simple to use consistently.

I’ll Stay with You Through the Years: Getting Rid of Accumulation

Even when people understand what they can do to manage new “stuff,” they often continue struggling to figure out what to do with years of clutter buildup. This portion of the program shares techniques for methodically working through a backlog without losing steam or getting off track.

The Time Is Precious I Know: Getting Time Back with Better Email Management

This final program segment is devoted to tactics for organizing and managing email. Participants will learn how to sort, store, and file online. They will also discover how to use rules and tasks to their best advantage.

By the conclusion of this interactive workshop, those attending should have a newfound energy to tackle piles, tidy up, and stay organized for good.
