Course Overview
This virtual two-hour course provides managers tools to create a culture of accountability that inspires motivation, engagement, and high performance. Participants will explore the link between accountability and motivation, focusing on how clear expectations and ownership lead to better results.
The program introduces the DELEGATE framework—a comprehensive goal-setting and communication tool designed to clarify roles, expectations, and accountability. Participants will learn to apply this framework to create actionable and measurable agreements with team members, ensuring alignment and mutual understanding.
Additionally, the course emphasizes the importance of listening and questioning techniques in fostering accountability. Managers will practice using open-ended questions to uncover barriers, clarify misunderstandings, and encourage proactive problem-solving. A section on peer accountability explores how managers can address gaps and set standards with colleagues, fostering a collaborative environment of mutual trust and respect.
Participants will also learn to use progress checkpoints and feedback loops to monitor performance without micromanaging and tackle common roadblocks effectively. Scenarios and real-world examples provide hands-on practice in delivering constructive feedback and handling missed deadlines with a focus on problem-solving over punishment.
By the program’s end, participants will be equipped with strategies for promoting accountability at all levels—team, peer, and individual—to drive better results and stronger relationships.
The following outline highlights the course’s main learning points. For virtual delivery, the structure and timing are intentionally set to support discussion and practice. We can adjust emphasis or drop select elements based on your business priorities. Upon request, we can preview the participant materials with you prior to the session(s).

- Use checkpoints and feedback loops to track progress without micromanagement.
- Address accountability gaps using the LLC framework.

- Apply REAL, Can We Agree, and COIN to strengthen agreements and restore follow-through.
- Use RACI and SMART goals to clarify responsibility, decision authority, and success criteria.
Workshop Modules
Motivation and Accountability: Exploring the Link
We start by connecting accountability to what drives follow-through in real work. During this discussion, participants will identify common motivation breakdowns, map how those breakdowns show up as missed commitments, and select manager responses that raise ownership without triggering defensiveness.
Expectations in Action: Using the DELEGATE Framework
Next, the program moves from intent to structure. Participants will work through the DELEGATE framework by rewriting a delegation scenario, clarifying outcomes and boundaries, and drafting language that assigns responsibility while keeping standards visible.
Track and Talk: Using Checkpoints and Feedback Loops
Once work is assigned, accountability lives in follow-up. Participants will design a lightweight tracking approach, choose checkpoint timing that fits the work, and practice brief check-in prompts that surface progress, obstacles, and next steps without turning the meeting into status theater.
The Constructive Conversation: Addressing Accountability Gaps
When follow-through slips, the response matters. The group will practice the LLC framework by diagnosing what broke down, selecting the right level of directness, and drafting a short conversation that restores clarity, confirms ownership, and closes the gap.
Ask and Listen: Using Questions to Uncover Barriers and Drive Ownership
Accountability strengthens when managers can surface what is actually in the way. Participants will practice question sets that uncover barriers, reasoning, and tradeoffs, then pair that with listening moves that keep the other person talking long enough to reach a workable commitment.
The Culture of Accountability: Creating a Teamwide Approach
To close the program, participants shift from one-off conversations to consistent standards. Participants will apply REAL, Can We Agree, and COIN to define expectations, set agreement language, and choose one structural move—such as RACI clarification or SMART goal tightening—that reduces recurring confusion about who owns what.
Target Audience
This program is designed for groups that want to:
- Strengthen follow-through without relying on pressure, reminders, or rescues.
- Improve delegation, tracking, and accountability conversations.
- Reduce rework, missed handoffs, and misunderstandings about expectations.
- Create team norms that make ownership visible and consistent.
