For more than 25 years, Business Training Works has helped organizations develop skilled facilitators through training, coaching, and consulting. Our programs span meeting facilitation, focus group leadership, and the full range of group discussions that keep organizations aligned.
We shape programs around the situations facilitators encounter in practice: groups without clear objectives, discussions that lose direction, participants who dominate or withdraw, competing viewpoints that need synthesis, and decisions that need to land.
We build sessions around proprietary frameworks and repeatable structures designed specifically for facilitation work. Participants leave with tools for opening discussions, managing group dynamics, synthesizing contributions, and bringing a session to a productive close.
Our programs span multiple facilitation contexts. Some address the essentials of running productive meetings. Others focus on focus group methodology, virtual and hybrid discussion leadership, and guiding groups through difficult or high-stakes conversations.
Participants spend time applying what they learn. We design activities around the discussion types, group compositions, and facilitation challenges participants face in their organizations, not generic scenarios built for a general audience.
We support leaders who facilitate strategic conversations, HR and L&D professionals who run focus groups and listening sessions, and internal trainers who need to guide groups rather than present to them.
We support divisions inside larger organizations that need focused help around a specific facilitation context or challenge. We also support midsize organizations building internal facilitation capacity without a dedicated practice.
Our facilitators are hired to lead organizational meetings, strategy sessions, and retreats for clients. That work happens outside the classroom, on problems that matter to the business. It shapes how they teach and what they bring into every program they deliver.
We build facilitation programs around a consistent, proprietary toolkit grounded in a straightforward premise: skilled facilitation is designed, not improvised. Our tools help facilitators plan sessions, open discussions with clarity, ask better questions, read a room, manage group dynamics, and bring groups to decisions with direction. Depending on the course, the toolkit may include:
Stakeholder Mapping Grid: Helps facilitators understand who is in the room before a session begins, including how each person relates to the topic, the decision, and others in the group.
START Framework: Helps facilitators launch a meeting with a consistent structure that orients participants and sets expectations before the discussion begins.
INQUIRE Model: Helps facilitators develop a complete set of questions before a session begins so discussions move with purpose rather than improvisation. The model covers multiple categories of questions, from surfacing alternatives to drawing out evidence.
The Communication Jungle: Helps facilitators recognize how different participants process information and make decisions so they can adapt their approach and keep the full group engaged.
No. We do not introduce tools for the sake of tools. If your organization already has a meeting model, workshop structure, or decision process that people know, we can work within it. Our job is to strengthen how your facilitators guide discussion, manage participation, handle tension, and move groups toward useful outcomes.
Usually, yes. For instructor-led training, we can often build a program that pulls from more than one course. The only caution is scope. When a proposed agenda tries to cover too much in too little time, the session loses focus. We will help you narrow the content so the program is practical, well paced, and worth the time.
The best starting point usually depends on who is facilitating, what kinds of sessions he is leading, where things are breaking down, and what better performance should look like afterward. Sometimes the need is basic meeting control. Sometimes it is workshop design, conflict handling, participation management, or decision support. A short conversation is often enough to identify the best fit.
Yes. Most of our facilitation courses can be delivered onsite or virtually. For distributed and global teams, virtual delivery is often a strong option because it lets participants practice the same conditions they face every day. We can adjust pacing, examples, and activities to account for time zones, cultural differences, and varying levels of facilitation experience.
That is a common reason groups contact us. Sometimes the issue is low participation. Sometimes one person dominates. Sometimes the discussion wanders, conflict goes unmanaged, or the meeting ends without clarity or follow-through. We have programs built for facilitators who are already in the role and need a stronger approach for guiding discussion, keeping groups on track, and producing better outcomes.
Because we do not treat facilitation as a generic soft skill. Strong facilitation depends on context. Leading a planning session, guiding a cross-functional meeting, running a problem-solving workshop, and managing a difficult discussion are not the same assignment. We tailor the program to your audience, your meeting culture, and the kinds of conversations your team needs to lead well.
