Understanding and Leveraging Communication Styles at Work

Course Highlights

This virtual communication styles course focused on working effectively across differences will:

  • Provide a shared, practical framework for understanding communication styles using The Communication Jungle®.
  • Reduce friction by explaining why capable professionals misread one another even when intent is positive.
  • Strengthen judgment around pace, tone, and priorities in everyday workplace communication.
  • Reinforce accountability by separating communication style from unacceptable or unproductive behavior.
  • Improve collaboration by helping learners stretch their approach across different styles.
  • Support clearer, more productive interactions in conversations, meetings, and written exchanges.

Course Overview

This two-hour virtual course examines communication styles as they actually play out at work. The experience begins by grounding style thinking in history and then builds toward practical application using The Communication Jungle framework, which explains how different styles influence communication preferences, stress responses, and interaction patterns.

Rather than treating styles as labels, the course treats them as tendencies that shape how people process information, respond under pressure, and interact with others. Throughout the session, learners test assumptions, examine real workplace situations, and consider how small adjustments change outcomes.

This is not a personality test and not a behavior-justification class. The focus stays on responsibility, boundaries, and effectiveness. Stronger results come from continued use after the session, not from the training alone.

The following outline highlights the course’s main learning points. For virtual delivery, the structure and timing are intentionally set to support discussion and practice. We can adjust emphasis or drop select elements based on your business priorities. Upon request, we can preview the participant materials with you prior to the session(s).

Note: The program includes the Communication Jungle assessment, which participants complete ahead of the session.

  • Outline style differences and similarities.
  • Recognize the behaviors associated with each style.
  • Discuss style-stretching strategies.
  • Adapt communication to work better with people of different styles.
  • Answer common questions about styles.

Program Modules

Nothing New: The History of Styles

The experience opens by orienting the audience to where people-style thinking comes from and why it has endured for centuries. Learners will examine how early temperament ideas evolved into modern workplace style frameworks. The group will discuss what these models help explain—and why they were never meant to predict performance or character.

It Takes All Kinds: Looking at Fundamentals

Once the groundwork is set, attention shifts to the principles that keep style awareness useful rather than reductive. Attendees will explore why most people reflect a blend of styles and why each style brings both strengths and limitations. The class will consider why differences often generate more friction than similarities and what that means for working relationships.

The Jungle Explained: Lions, Peacocks, Doves, and Turtles

With shared rules in place, the course walks through the four Communication Jungle styles in detail. Learners will identify common patterns, stressors, and triggers associated with Lions, Peacocks, Doves, and Turtles. Participants will connect those patterns to everyday workplace interactions they recognize immediately.

Clues and Cues: Style Spotting

From there, the focus turns outward to observation. Learners will practice noticing how styles tend to surface through language, pace, questions, and nonverbal behavior. The group will interpret cues in context, reinforcing why signals should inform judgment rather than drive snap conclusions.

Bend and Stretch: Flexing Skills

As the course moves toward application, adaptability takes center stage. Learners will apply general stretching strategies to communicate more effectively across styles. Everyone will practice adjusting pace, tone, and level of detail to support clarity and follow-through without trying to change other people.

Survey Says…:Discovering the Answers to Common Questions

The experience closes by addressing the questions that typically surface once people begin using style language. Participants will examine how stress, experience, and team makeup influence style expression over time. The class will clarify what can change, what tends to stay stable, and where responsibility always remains.

Target Audience

This program is designed for teams and professionals who want to:

  • Work more effectively across different communication styles.
  • Reduce friction and misunderstanding that slow progress.
  • Build shared language around style differences while maintaining accountability.
