Course Overview

Strategic planning with senior leaders is crucial to an organization’s success.  If treated as a review session of ho-hum initiatives, with little or no preparation, it can be a demoralizing waste of time and effort.

This interactive, no-fluff, Kumbaya-free workshop will improve the way senior teams view strategic planning and scenario planning.

Under a facilitator’s guidance, the team will confirm its direction and preferred alternatives using techniques that provoke new ideas while building support for those decisions.

This program works best as part of an offsite meeting or executive retreat.

Program Objectives

At this program's conclusion, participants should be able to:

  • Answer a host of questions about the state of their organization.
  • Employ a variety of tools to evaluate problems and make decisions.
  • Look at their organization from several angles.
  • Work from a strategic plan.
  • Effectively address a variety of “what-if” situations.

The following outline highlights some of the course's key learning points. As part of your training program, we will modify content as needed to meet your business objectives. Upon request, we will provide you with a copy of the participant materials prior to the session(s).

Workshop Outline

Stretching Exercises: Warming Up Mentally
This course begins with an exploration of 15 groups of questions.  From simple queries such as, “What three things do you spend most of your time on at work?” to others that are more complex, this opening exercise quickly focuses the group on the planning tasks ahead.
Basic Training: Engaging for Better Thinking
Collaboration is a primary strategy for improving company performance.  During this segment of the course, participants will use a variety of tools to answer their business questions. After practicing these systematic creative thinking techniques, the group will be ready tackle the strategic planning process.
Building Endurance: Working Through the Strategic Plan
This portion of the program includes nine exercises to guide the team through the nuts and bolts of forming a strategic plan: mission, vision, values, principles, scoreboard, comprehensive business environment analysis, objectives, strategies, action plans, plan implementation considerations, and plan monitoring. At the end of this segment, the group will have a draft of a document that will guide the organization’s leaders and employees to identify, prioritize, and assign opportunities.
Looking Forward to the Next Race: Working Through Scenario Planning
This part of the course is about “thinking around the corner.”  During this discussion, the team will consider alternative futures (not predictions) in order to prepare a successful response plan no matter what happens.  The result of this effort is an understanding of what may need to happen before immediate action can be taken.
Embracing a Lifestyle: Maintaining the Momentum
This final part of the workshop reviews next steps and  addresses any implementation roadblocks that have surfaced during the program.
By the conclusion of this strategic planning course, participants should have a blueprint in place to guide their thinking and actions as they relate to the business.
