Communication Skills for Managers and Supervisors

Course Highlights

This communication course for managers and supervisors will:

  • Outline the importance of strong communication for people in management roles.
  • Provide learners with a framework (CRATE) for planning messages.
  • Highlight behaviors to adopt and avoid.
  • Emphasize the importance of goal, role, and task clarity to ensure shared understanding.
  • Offer templates for planning a persuasive argument, giving feedback, navigating conflict, and communicating during times of change.

Course Overview

It’s hard to overemphasize the value of managers with strong communication skills. These people set the tone for a team, engage their direct reports, and effectively manage relationships across an organization. This model-rich course is designed to help people in charge enhance their abilities to influence others at work.

The workshop begins by examining how strong communication positively impacts team performance and organizational effectiveness. Participants will explore emotional intelligence and its importance in building self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship skills. Using the CRATE framework, they will learn to structure messages that are clear, relevant, authentic, transparent, and empathetic, ensuring that communication goals, roles, and tasks are fully understood.

Throughout the course, participants will identify and address common behaviors that can undermine credibility and influence, while practicing key listening skills with the HEAR framework. Techniques such as de Bono’s Six Hats and Socratic questioning will help participants gather diverse perspectives and engage in deeper conversations. The workshop also covers essential skills for presenting arguments, delivering and receiving feedback using the STEP framework, and handling conflict through the HEARD model. Participants will conclude by crafting a communication plan to support their teams during periods of change, creating a foundation for ongoing, impactful leadership.

The following outline highlights some of the course’s key learning points. As part of your training program, we will modify content as needed to meet your business objectives. Upon request, we will provide you with a copy of the participant materials prior to the session(s).
