Program Outline

Many people are defeated by the awesome task of writing. They do not trust themselves to use written language effectively. They go to the files to see what has been done in the past. To overcome their insecurity, they try to write to impress by hunting for "big" words. They also pad their reports as proof of their thoroughness. Unfortunately, such tactics prevent writing that is clear or concise. This program will help participants learn to practice the habits of good writers.

Program Objectives

At this program's conclusion, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the value of good written communications.
  • Develop paragraphs that introduce, connect, develop, and conclude some part of an idea.
  • Prepare reports and proposals that inform and persuade.
  • Proofread work so it is clear, concise, complete, and correct.
  • Apply their knowledge to real workplace writing tasks.

The following outline highlights some of the course's key learning points. As part of your training program, we will modify content as needed to meet your business objectives. Upon request, we will provide you with a copy of the participant materials prior to the session(s).

Course Outline

Basic Training: The Rules of Writing

Using a recent report, participants will evaluate their work against nine rules of effective report writing. Next, they will use the Gunning Fog Index to determine the readability of their documents.

Good Soldiers: Paragraphs

After determining where they are strong and where they need to improve, the group will discuss the importance of topic sentences and how to create them. Then they will explore ways to create emphasis and unity in their documents.

Why People Follow: Active and Passive Voice

People speak in the active voice but often write in the passive voice. As a result, readers often tune out and turn off even though they could have digested the information. This segment of the program quickly explains the importance of the active voice and how to incorporate it into all reports and proposals. It also covers rare instances when using the passive voice is the better choice.

Leading the Way: Visual Considerations

This segment provides a brief introduction to laying out a report and effective ways to add distinctive headings, charts, and graphs to texts.

A Different Kind of Battle: Writing Proposals

During this concluding section, participants will learn how writing a proposal is different from writing a report. They will discuss steps in the persuasion process, how to design a message, and how to deal with tough questions.

At the program's conclusion, participants will have an understanding of the core elements of effective reports and proposals.  Furthermore, they should know how to craft paragraphs that either document information or persuade readers to take action.
