Program Overview
Whether instructing on OSHA compliance, safety equipment, or safe workplace practices, the safety trainer has a critical role in preventing accidents and errors before they occur. Too often, however, safety training is perceived as dull, uninteresting, and even a waste of time. This course is designed to combat those reactions and to help both experienced and new safety trainers to effectively deliver content in a meaningful and engaging way.
Program Objectives
At this program's conclusion, participants should be able to:
- Demonstrate how to sell safety to a group of participants.
- Explain adult learning principles.
- Develop engaging activities around any topic.
- Demonstrate how to deal with difficult participants.
- Deliver the same content in several different ways.
- Effectively use video, PowerPoint, sound, and models.
- Measure what a group already knows, what they’ve learned, and whether they are using those skills back on the job.
The following outline highlights some of the course’s key learning points. As part of your training program, we will modify content as needed to meet your business objectives. Upon request, we will provide you with a copy of participant materials prior to the session(s).
It's More Than Compliance: Selling Safety
This opening module addresses the safety trainer's first goal: connecting with learners and selling the importance of safety to those he or she is training. During this part of the workshop participants will develop their opening stories and practice different methods for introducing their training sessions.
The Greatest Show on Earth: Understanding How Adults Learn
In this segment of the workshop participants will discuss active techniques for making learning stick. While working with their organization's training materials, they will discover what works with adult learners and what doesn't. Then during practice sessions they will teach others in the group using new tactics learned.
It's Called a Dialogue: Engaging All Participants
Even with a great story and activity-based learning, a training program can fail if the facilitator cannot create a dialogue and manage his or her classroom and participants. This section of the course explores methods for dealing with difficult students, less-than-ideal learning environments, and other roadblocks that can interfere with the learning process.
Choices not Chances: Using Active Learning Techniques
Great trainers and instructors can teach the same content countless ways. During this part of the program, participants will learn dozens of techniques for bringing new life to their material. They will then practice delivering their content in a way that they have not done before.
Better than a Thousand Words: Using PowerPoint, Models, and Videos
Too often tools that should enhance learning only serve to distract or disconnect students from the training objectives. This part of the session focuses on using pictures, videos, models, and videos the right way.
Measured Responses: Assessing What They Know and What They Have Learned
During this final portion of the course participants will explore assessment methods: discovering what their group knows before a training session, ascertaining what people are learning during training, and determining whether participants are applying new knowledge back on the job.
By the conclusion of this train-the-trainer seminar for safety and health trainers, participants should understand their roles, be able to sell their programs to an audience, demonstrate the ability to manage a classroom, and know what steps to take to determine whether the content learned during training is applied back on the job.
