Expatriation - Cultural Briefings

Cross-Cultural Communication Skills Course

Going Global –
Getting Down to Business Outside the
United States

Program Overview

When doing business somewhere else, navigating through diverse cultural business environments is an essential skill.  This hands-on, fast-paced program leads participants through a discussion of what culture is, why it’s important to understand, and gives them the essential tools for succeeding in specific business cultures around the world.

Program Objectives

At this program's conclusion, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the key elements of culture and cultural identity.
  • Discover how to function effectively in another culture’s business environment.
  • Avoid communication breakdowns caused by cultural gaps.
  • Understand how cultural differences can affect the negotiation process and negotiation outcomes.
  • Effectively manage culture stress caused by living and working in a foreign country.

The following outline highlights some of the course’s key learning points. As part of your training program, we will modify content as needed to meet your business objectives. Upon request, we will provide you with a copy of participant materials prior to the session(s).

Course Outline

Leaving on a Jet Plane: Understanding Differences in a New Culture
Beginning a new job anywhere can be challenging, but starting one in a foreign country can be overwhelming. Designed for those who will soon be starting work in a different country, this course begins with a discussion of what culture is, how it evolves, what elements come together to make a culture unique, and why adapting is critical to successful business relations.

You’re Not in Kansas Anymore: Country-Specific Essential Information
This highly customized unit addresses doing business in countries outside the United States.  Apprised of specific countries before the session, the instructor will present information about a country’s cultural values and beliefs, verbal and nonverbal language, protocol and etiquette, transportation, food, safety and security, gift giving, and expected business behavior.

Nods, Bows, Smiles, and Scowls: Reading Body Language Abroad
In this component, participants will review the basics of reading body language as it is interpreted in the United States. Against this frame of reference, the instructor will show how body language in other cultures may signal vastly different messages than those they are used to sending and receiving in America.

You Want Po-ta-to, I Want Po-tah-to:  Negotiating in Other Cultures
Negotiating with business people from other cultures brings its own set of special challenges. This portion of the training includes a review of  basic negotiation skills as they apply to U.S. business situations. From this starting point, participants will learn how to negotiate using strategies and tactics that are acceptable in the country where they will soon be working.

In My Mind I’m Going to Carolina:  Managing Stress While on the Road
Being away from home, even for a short period of time, can create stress and negatively influence business outcomes.  This final lesson teaches participants to identify cultural stressors, introduces coping mechanisms, and suggests self-care activities to help reduce stress while trying to reach business goals.

At the program's conclusion, participants will have an understanding of  the concept of culture, cross cultural differences, negotiating in other cultures, and managing the stress of being away from home.

This course can be adjusted to include participants’ families as well.
