Program Overview
Briefings are an essential and ever-present element of communication in the military. They can educate, clarify, confuse, bore, or inspire depending on how they are designed and delivered. This military briefing course is intended to help people at all skill levels to improve their ability to effectively conduct military briefings.
Program Objectives
At this program's conclusion, participants should be able to:
- Identify the four types of military briefings.
- Describe an audience analysis and why it is a needed step in preparing for a briefing.
- Organize information in a clear, meaningful, and concise manner.
- Effectively incorporate PowerPoint into their briefings.
- Plan for obstacles.
- Begin implementing goals created during the session.
The following outline highlights some of the course's key learning points. As part of your training program, we will modify content as needed to meet your business objectives. Upon request, we will provide you with a copy of the participant materials prior to the session(s).
Surveying the Environment: Why Am I Here?
This opening segment begins with a discussion about the different types of military briefings (information briefings, decision briefings, mission briefings, and staff briefings) and when to use each.
Identifying the Target: Who Are These People?
Is the audience basically the same or is it made up of several different groups? Is this information new to them? Is it of interest? How will they react? How much do they already know? In this second section of military briefing training we will look at all of the questions effective briefers ask before they create their first slide or note card.
Plotting the Course: How Am I Going to Organize My Information?
During this part of the workshop participants will explore various ways to organize information, isolate key points, and identify compelling supporting data. Through mind-mapping and other techniques they will be able to quickly craft a framework for any briefing.
Drawing a Road Map: How Do I Use PowerPoint and Other Visuals?
Slides are a part of military briefing. Great slides can add emphasis to a message, but bad ones can destroy what would otherwise have been a good presentation. This part of the program examines the rules of creating good slides and how to use them effectively.
Overcoming Obstacles: What Do I Need to Plan Around?
Is the room too small? Does the projector often not work? Is the briefing scheduled at an inconvenient time? In this part of the program participants will consider typical barriers to successful briefings and solutions for each.
Drilling on Your Feat: Am I Ready?
Confident, knowledgeable, logical, and concise. These are a few of the words used to describe expert military presenters. In addition to practice throughout the course, this part of the program focuses on practicing delivery and modeling the characteristics of exceptional briefers. During this final segment, each participant will brief the class on a subject of his or her choosing.
At the conclusion of this presentation skills course, participants will understand what it takes to design and deliver an effective military briefing.
