Course Outline
We Are the World: Understanding Cultural Similarities and Differences
A culture can be elusive, strange, and intimidating until it is examined and compared to other cultures. This unit defines culture and looks at its impact, especially on global business partnerships. In this initial discussion, the instructor will outline the features of a global workplace and explain how organizations can have the competitive edge by preparing their staffs for international interactions. Participants will map out the norms of the United States on the Iceberg of Culture model and will investigate such topics as the concept of self, personal versus societal responsibility, time, and internal versus external control to explain work styles.
Worlds Apart: Shortening the Distance through Knowledge
In this second unit, participants will receive country-specific overviews of necessary information including geographical locations, identities of heads of state, names and locations of major airports, travel times, time differences, and more. They will again use the Iceberg of Culture model to discover the norms for specific countries and discuss the concepts of self, responsibility, time, and control as they are understood in other cultures.
Working as One: Learning to Accommodate
As part of a global team, each member contributes to establishing credibility and building relationships. This section of the training focuses on how culture-specific management styles, customer and partner relationships, and core values and societal norms affect workplace activities including scheduling appointments, conducting meetings, and giving presentations.
Is That a Yes or a No?: Verbal and Physical Communication
Reading culture-specific gestures, respecting personal space, interpreting body language accurately, and engaging in small talk all contribute to first-rate business communication. Through hands-on exercises, participants will have an opportunity to fine tune their international business communication skills. This unit clarifies how to communicate across cultures, recognize communication styles, and become an effective cross-cultural communicator. Exercises target building relationships through written and verbal communication etiquette and protocol.
Before You Pounce, Creep, Squawk, or Fly: Mastering The Communication Jungle
In this component, participants will learn to understand different behavioral styles using Business Training Works' signature diagnostic tool, The Communication Jungle. It will enable them to identify their own behavioral styles and those of their coworkers and clients for the purpose of helping them adjust for better communication. This exercise is beneficial to all who wish to get along better with others who communicate differently than they do.
Best Foot Forward: Saying and Doing the "Right" Things
Forms of address, hierarchies, names, titles, business cards, and gift-giving protocols often frustrate uninformed business people who are interacting with those from other countries. This final lesson addresses such issues as assuming roles during meetings, making seating arrangements, and understanding their responsibilities as hosts. Participants will explore common and not-so-common business situations and find out what to do for maximum effectiveness in each.
At the program's conclusion, participants will have an understanding of how culture impacts communication styles, work habits, and etiquette in the United States as well as in other countries. With the information presented throughout this program, they will understand what is necessary to handle international business situations with knowledge, style, and grace.
