Program Overview

Even seasoned professionals occasionally need a brush up, especially if they are working on a team and producing technically correct yet non-uniform documents. This program is designed for people who regularly write as part of their job. The course works best if the participants bring documents that they are currently working on to the program.

Program Objectives

At this program's conclusion, participants should be able to:

  • Identify their writing challenges.
  • Make their writing clear, concise, and correct.
  • Improve sentence construction and paragraph development.
  • Identify ways to make their writing simpler and easier to read.
  • Apply the readability index to their texts.
  • Develop an appropriate writing style and format for letters, business cases, and reports.
  • Develop effective business correspondence for tough situations.

The following outline highlights some of the course's key learning points. As part of your training program, we will modify content as needed to meet your business objectives. Upon request, we will provide you with a copy of the participant materials prior to the session(s).

Course Outline

Composition Considerations: Essential Elements of Good Writing
All writing should be clear, concise, and correct. We will look at these three elements in detail during this segment and evaluate existing documents brought to the session by the participants.

Simply Elegant: Grammar and Writing Mechanics
This segment outlines seven easy ways to help participants simplify their writing and ensure their grammar is correct. Participants will also take a close look at the proper length of paragraphs, what a paragraph should contain, and how to order paragraphs.

Matching the Occasion: Determining Readability
During this portion of the program, participants will use the readability test (also called the Gunning Fog Index) on their own work to determine its clarity.

Putting It Together: Writing Letters
There are 12 important parts to a business letter and several different styles. In this next section of the program, we will examine all of these closely and discuss the value and importance of a style sheet for groups of writers producing documents together.

Special Events: Dealing with Specific Requests
Often people are asked to respond to a request for information or to write a particular kind of letter (for example, a letter of recommendation or commendation). We'll discuss some tips to keep in mind when writing one of these particular documents.

At the program's conclusion, participants should have the tools to sharpen their writing skills and attack their existing workload with renewed energy and confidence.
